HMS Roberts was a Roberts class monitor built for the Royal Navy during the early stages of WW2 and comissioned in October 1941. Her role was to take part in shore bombardments and provide support for landing troops whenever a naval invasion was taking place. This required a vessel with large guns (in her case 15 inch), but also a shallow draught to be able to approach closser to the shoreline which in turn required a fairly ‘blocky’ vessel and as such speed suffered with a top speed of 12 knots.
